Sometimes climbing Steep Hill in Lincoln can be like stepping back in time. When you're at the top you can look down at the city centre and see the major names in retail and the busy leisure facilities. Yet at the same time you're standing in the middle of cobbled streets, alongside an array of fascinating and endearing independent shops, bars and hotels.

Uphill Lincoln is very much a village in its own right, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern city centre, and the two streets that best suggest this are Bailgate and Burton Road. Together they're home to numerous attractive shops, bars, hotels and tourist attractions, and most of them are based in buildings that have been standing for many years. An association, the Bailgate Guild, links all the traders and has regular meetings, emphasising the village ethos
